A couple days before Christmas my gums started hurting. It started to just hurt a little and then it got worse. It was just one spot at first and I found that when I put pressure on it, it felt better. So I flossed it, probably a little too much. After that it really started to hurt. I figured I just messed with it too much and it would heal. After a couple days of it not getting better I figured I should go and see my dentist. But by this time it was Christmas Eve and my dentists office was closed. Then closed Christmas day and the day after. So I figured I was stuck waiting until Thursday to get it checked out. I feared that I had an infection.
Then Megan got sick and with all that went into that, I just dealt with all the mouth pain. But while we were in the hospital with Megan my mouth was even worse then before. Now my bottom teeth were hurting and so was the whole side of my face. My head was killing me and my ear was starting to hurt. So Tony talked me into leaving the hospital on Thursday and seeing the dentist.
I got to the dentist and told them my story. They took x-rays and checked my teeth and he said nothing was wrong and that everything looked good. He said I was biting down a little hard on my crown, so he grinned down the tooth. But besides that all looked good. I was shocked. How could I be having this much mouth pain with nothing wrong. Not that I wanted to have a root canal or anything, but I was in pain and the pain meds I had did not help at all.
So I headed home to get us somethings for the hospital before going back up to be with Tony and Megan. The dentist said that it would take about a week to feel better - I wasn't sure I would last. So I just continued to deal with the pain. I was up quite late Thursday night trying to sleep through the pain. Friday the pain was even worse. So bad I even called my dentist back to see how long to wait for the pain to get better. He still said a week.
Megan was doing better on Friday and it was my friend, Mikes wedding that day. Tony told me I should go because there was nothing I could do there, so I might as well see my friend get married. So I went, even though I was in a lot of pain. I had a friend of mine tell me that she had really bad teeth pain when she had a sinus infection and then two other friends said they had the same thing. WHAT??? A sinus infection. That makes total sense. My head was totally hurting and stuffy, but I thought that the teeth caused my head to hurt, not that my head caused my teeth to hurt.
So after Megan got discharged and we got home and settled I went to the Urgent Care to see if I had a sinus infection. Yep, not question about it. I guess it is quite common for your teeth to hurt with a sinus infection because your sinuses are right on top of the roots of your teeth. So if your infection gets bad enough, your roots hurt.
So I got some antibiotics and pain meds and went home. That night was really hard. The pain meds didn't touch my roots and they just killed all night. Putting water in my mouth did help, so I would wake up and have to swish the water around and then try to go back to sleep. That worked until about two that morning, then the pain was just too much. The only thing that made the pain go away was having cool water in my mouth.
So every one to two minutes I would have to take a drink of cool water and let it sit on my teeth. It was like putting out a fire. The pain came fast and strong but as soon as I put the water on my teeth, it felt so much better. But one can not live like this. I did that all day Saturday. I just made sure I always had water with me. I called the doctor back that I went to the night before. The pain was maddening. The weirdest thing I have ever had to deal with. I couldn't believe the pain. I would cry, it hurt that bad. Poor Tony, I was becoming a crazy lady.
So the doctor gave me a stronger antibiotic and stronger pain bills. I took them that night and prayed that they would work. It took until about 1:30 Sunday morning before I felt any relief. I think that the antibiotics kicked in and relieved some of the pressure. I was so happy that that horrible pain was gone. My teeth still ache, but nothing like they did. Sunday morning I got up and my head was a mess, but the root pain was gone. It was officially moving from my teeth to my head. I felt like crap, but I was glad to have the crazy pain gone.
I feel a little bit better today, but it is a slow recovery. I am so thankful to Tony for taking care of us all while Megan and I have been sick. Sunday was his birthday. Probably the worst birthday ever. I will definitely have to make it up to him. He is such a great dad and husband. So glad that he has been here to help with everything. Time for Megan and Mommy to get all better!
